Lately, we’ve seen an increasing number of robotic vacuum cleaners enter the market. That’s good and all, but what about hybrid bots – the ones that both vacuum and mop floors?
If this sounds like something you’d be interested in, check out our review of the S5 MAX Robot Vacuum and Mop of the Roborock line. Spoiler alert: this robot will exceed your wildest expectations about what a vacuum-mop combo bot can do.
Awesome Vacuuming Performance
As one of the latest Roborock models, there’s really nothing to worry about in terms of vacuuming performance.
The S5 MAX is designed to handle the dust like an absolute beast thanks to its strong suction power. This robotic vacuum cleaner works well on all floor types, including low- and medium-pile carpeting.
Furthermore, it comes with a front brushroll that has silicone blades which dig deep into carpet fibers and extract embedded dirt and long strands of hair from your floors effortlessly. The main brushroll (with the brustles) may become clogged with hair so you’ll need to snip the strands off every once in a while.

Smart Mopping System
Similar to most hybrid robots, the S5 MAX comes with a detachable water tank that takes the place of the dustbin. With the water tank module in place, the S5 MAX converts from an awesome vacuuming cleaner into an awesome mop.
The tank holds onto 290 mL of water and the water drips slowly onto the pad (variable water flow rate selected in smartphone app),.
Best of all, if the robot detects that a part of your floor has already been mopped, it’ll stop supplying water to the pad until the S5 MAX has reached a yet-to-be-mopped area. How does it do this?

High-Precision Laser Navigation
The unbelievable mopping and vacuuming performance of the S5 MAX comes down to its navigation system. The S5 MAX is equipped with a high-precision laser that, when the robot is booted up for the first time, creates an accurate digital layout of your home.
The robot is always checking and recording which parts of the map it has visited in real-time so as to preserve battery power by preventing multiple passes over the same spot. Pretty neat, right?
Multi-Map Storage
Many of the more futuristic (modern) robots are only able to store one map of your home’s floors, but no the S5 MAX. it has enough storage capacity to create and save up to three different maps.
For those of you with multiple-story homes, the S5 MAX’s multi-map storage will be a time-saver since it won’t have to re-create and save over the floor plans of another story. Accessing the map through your smartphone is where the real magic is. For instance…
Programmable No-Go Zones
You can set up no-go zones and virtual barriers that the robot cannot pass. No-go zones are an excellent feature that prevents the robot from wandering into a room or part of the home that you don’t want it to (e.g. near pet bowls or specific rooms).
A virtual barrier works exactly like a virtual wall by telling the robot, when coming near the barrier, to tuck-tail and head in another direction. You should create either no-go zones or virtual barriers when the S5 MAX is switched to mopping mode.

Selective Room Cleaning
Also, by accessing one of the saved maps in the smartphone app, you can select a specific room for the S5 MAX to vacuum or mop.
So if you’d like a specific part of your home cleaned, you don’t need to wait for the S5 to venture through there during its cleaning cycle but instead by choosing the room, the robot will make a beeline for the area and begin work.
Auto-Recharge and Resume
To add to the already convenience of the S5 MAX, it has auto-recharge and resume functions hardwired in its brain. When the robot senses a low battery, it’ll head straight to its charging dock and begin the recharging process (roughly 3 hours from 0 to 100%).
If it needed to refuel in the midway through its cleaning cycle, after the battery has reached max capacity, the S5 MAX will pick up where it left off as if it didn’t just take a 180-minute break. Please note that you cannot set up no-go zones or virtual barriers in the same room as its charging dock.

Verdict
There have been an astounding number of complaints about the original S5 so we’re glad to see that they listened. Everything the people wanted – a bigger water tank, better navigation, and so on – have been implemented into the S5 MAX.
It’s great that they pay close attention to what the market has to say, and if you ever get the change to try or buy the S5 MAX, you’ll see what we mean. If you’re looking for the best vacuum-mop combo bot, the S5 MAX by Roborock is definitely worth spending some time considering.
