Pentair LL505G Kreepy Krauly Legend Review (Pressure Side Cleaner)

There are a ton of advantages of pressure side pool cleaners over robotic pool cleaners. For one, because they rely on booster pumps or water pushed back into your pool, they become a second line of defense at filtering pool water. They’re completely separate from any existing filtration system your pool may have.

Today, we’re going to take a look at one awesome pressure side pool cleaner coming from none other than Pentair: the LL505G Kreepy Krauly. Don’t let the name fool you; this pool cleaner is anything but creepy. It filters at an amazing rate to ensure crystal-clear water and algae-free walls and corners. How the Legend Works

The Legend works like any other side pressure pool cleaner, albeit a lot better than most. This pool cleaner takes water from a booster pump which is then used to propel its forward and backward movement. On the Legend is a wide inlet throat which swallows everything whole.

It suctions up to a jaw-dropping 40 gallons of water every minute to maximize its cleaning efficiency to near-unbelievable levels. The water passes through an oversized filter bag which traps all sorts of debris, from fine algae to dead leaves and even large acorns.

4-Wheel Design

Unlike so many other side pressure pool cleaners, the Legend comes with four wheels for better traction. With front-wheel drive combined with grippy wheels and high-torque acceleration, the Legend is able to scale walls near your pool’s water line to deliver on its crystal-clear promise.

The tires work better at scaling sloped walls than steep 90° ones, though it does reach near the top eventually. The wheels have a limited lifespan of up to 12 months depending on the material used to line your pool (concrete will wear the tires out quicker).

Booster Pump Required

As we mentioned in an earlier section, the Legend requires a booster pump to function. There’s no way around it—it needs the added boost of high-pressure water to keep it moving back and forth. If your pool is already equipped with a booster pump, then you should be good to go assuming it has at least a ¾-HP motor. If not, Pentair has a couple of ¾-HP booster pumps that are 100% compatible with the Legend (sold separately, of course).

Installation

Getting the Legend hooked up to your pool and ready to begin its maiden cleaning cycle isn’t all that difficult. It comes with all of the supplies needed to get started. Simply hook up the wall adapter into the booster pump’s pressure line by twisting the pressure relief vale fitting clockwise.

To remove the Legend, just turn it counter-clockwise and pull the legend up and out of your pool. All in all, it’ll probably take about 30 minutes to get set up properly (adjusting pressure and whatnot).

30-foot Feed Hose

The Legend comes with a 30-foot feed hose that offers free movement in in-ground pools of more than 25 feet long. If you have shorter pools, feel free to cut the feed hose down to length to prevent excessive slack. Just make there the hose isn’t taut when the robot reaches the opposite end of your pool.

Sweep Hose

One of the most unique features of the Legend is its Sweep Hose. This hose connects to the backside of the Legend and delivers a high-pressure blast of water to dislodge embedded algae and dirt hiding in corners and edges for the powerful suction to pick up.

Large-Capacity Debris Bag

On top of the Legend is a sizable debris bag. All water passing through the booster pump and the suction inlet makes its way through the bag where the fine-mesh lining traps residue, debris, and algae. Depending on how large and how dirty your pool gets, the bag can hold onto several cleaning sessions’ worth of debris before even reaching maximum capacity.

To empty the bag, detach it from the Legend, dump the contents (maybe in a backyard mulch pile?) and spray the inside with a hose. The bags need to be replaced every three to six months.

Verdict: Should I Get the Pentair LL505G Kreepy Krauly Legend?

As a side pressure pool cleaner, the Kreepy Krauly Legend is among some of the best out there. Its navigation, though random, hits the mark nearly every time thanks to the four high-grip tires with front-wheel drive. Plus, the ability to filter 40 gallons of water every minute is not something to scoff at.

If you don’t have the budget for a robotic pool cleaner but want perfectly cleaned pool walls and water before taking a dip, the Pentair LL505G Kreepy Krauly Legend is an excellent, affordable option.
