With spring just around the corner, it’s time to place our space heaters in storage and think about how we’re going to stay cool and comfortable as the temperature slowly increases. If your home isn’t equipped with a centralized air conditioner, nor are you fond of the idea of drilling a hole through a wall to pass ductwork through, then a portable air conditioner is your best option.

Honeywell HL10CESWW 10000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner Review

The Honeywell HL10CESWW is a moderately sized, multi-functional portable AC unit that works beautifully at keeping heat out. Take a look at our in-depth review of the Honeywell to see whether it belongs in your home.

450-square-foot Capacity

When researching different portable air conditioner units, one of the first questions you need answered is which rooms will it cool the most often? You’ll need to take measurements beforehand to ensure you’re getting the appropriate-sized model for the job.

In the Honeywell’s case, it works optimally in rooms of between up to 450 square feet.

This Honeywell works best in the average bedroom, home office, most apartments, and hobby rooms. This is far from being the largest portable air conditioner out there so it may not be the best choice for kitchens and living rooms.

Washable Dual Filters

Air conditioners draw air from the outdoors, cool it down, then shoot it into a room, possibly introducing new and great quantities of airborne pollutants into your home. The Honeywell’s dual-filtration system works to reduce the amount of pollutants if not prevent it from happening altogether.

With two filters, the Honeywell is able to retain most particles before they have a chance to settle inside of your home. Maintaining the filters is simple—just run them under cool water and allow to dry before reinstalling. The filters are designed to last for up to two years, but its lifespan depends on how dirty the air is and how often you run the machine.

Easy Installation

The biggest trouble people have with portable air conditioners is setting them up. The Honeywell comes with all of the parts needed to get it up and running; the only real challenge is getting the window kit set up properly.

The Honeywell’s window kit can fit most standard windows, either vertically or horizontally, and the long 4-foot hose makes allows you to run it through high-up windows. You may need to purchase an additional window kit or cut it down to size.

Or you could use duct tape and carboard slabs to fully cover the opened window. Your choice.

Auto-Evaporation Dehumidifier Mode

Don’t let anyone tell you that a portable air conditioner isn’t as versatile as it is portable. The Honeywell comes with a built-in dehumidifier that is activated by switching to Dry mode. The dehumidifier has a rating of up to 80 pints per day, making it extremely useful to have during the summertime.

However, remember that this is a portable AC that comes with a dehumidifier. There is no internal pump to shoot condensed moisture out through a window—you’ll need to manually dump the catch-bucket from time to time.

Comprehensive Controls

You’ll find on the top panel of the Honeywell a control panel that gives you access to all of the unit’s controls. The oversized buttons with clear pictures should eliminate any confusion regarding how to operate the machine.

Or better yet, if you don’t want to get up from the couch to turn the Honeywell on and off, you can use the handy remote control to send instructions from afar. This portable AC unit comes with two AAA batteries for the remote.

Timer and Sleep Mode

Portable air conditioners are notorious for being loud; that’s the trade-off you get with mobility. However, this is not the case with the Honeywell.

On its highest fan speed, this unit produces a constant drone of only 52 decibels (about the same level as common background household noises), but if you switch it to sleep mode with the 10-hour timer, you’ll hardly notice it silently working away inside of your bedroom.

Cheap Plastic-y Exhaust Pipe

One of the first things you’ll notice is the exhaust pipe. It’s a crucial piece that shoots hot air outside or to another room, but unfortunately, it appears to be made of a cheap plastic that can easily crack.

When attaching and running the exhaust hose out of an open window, be sure to do it slowly and carefully.

Verdict: Should I Get the Honeywell HL10CESWW?

The Honeywell HL10CESWW works exceptionally well in small spaces, but there are two things about it that truly shine. The first is its dehumidifying function that condenses up to 80 pints of water daily—a must-have feature for those who suffer from the mugginess of summer.

The second is its super-quiet operation that is easily masked by household noises.
