Frigidaire FAD504DWD 50-Pint Dehumidifier Review

With spring knocking on the door, it’s time to put our air conditioners to rest and figure out a way to keep insufferable humidity out of our homes. Opening a window does a lot more harm than good, so to keep mugginess at bay, you should consider getting a dehumidifier.

Frigidaire FAD504DWD 50-Pint Dehumidifier Review

In this article, we’re going to see whether the FAD504DWD is the right dehumidifier for you. It may not be the most attractive dehumidifier out there, but don’t let this fool you.

It’s a beast of a dehumidifier that would fit well in any home in any place on the Earth where indoor humidity is a major problem.

3,000-square-foot Dehumidifying Range

The first thing potential customers will notice is the sheer size of the Frigidaire compared to other residential-grade dehumidifiers. Its bulkiness does make it a bit challenging to find an appropriate place for it to sit, but it also houses a humungous motor that circulares air in rooms of up to 3,000 square feet.

If you’re looking for a multi-room dehumidifier, this Frigidaire model might be your best option.

50-PPD Condensing Rate

Frigidaire promises that this model can condense up to 50 pints of moisture per day. If you think about it, that’s a lot of sweat-inducing water snatched out of the air every 24 hours that could potentially contribute to mold growth.

After testing this model, we’ve found that it stays true to this promise; on its higher fan speed (it’s a 2-speed machine), it does remove 50 PPD of airborne moisture.

This makes the FAD504DWD a great option for those with washing rooms or water heaters in their basement. Being able to remove this much water means faster laundry drying times, less mold growth, and ultimately, fewer instances of humidity-related health problems in the long run.

For a 50-PPD dehumidifier, you really can’t ask for more.

Tiny 16.3-Pint Water Tank

The sad thing is that the FAD504DWD’s collection tank can only hold onto 16.3 pints of water at a time. This means for those living in extremely humid parts of the globe, you’ll need to empty the tank out numerous times throughout the day.

A pain in the neck, sure, but a necessary one to prevent warped floor boards and slipping hazards.

The good news is that the FAD504DWD has an auto-shutoff feature that kills the motor as soon as the tank reaches max capacity.

This feature eliminates the guesswork needed to ensure continuous optimal performance every time you switch it on.

Optional Continuous Draining

However, you can get rid of the headache of frequently emptying the water tank out by connecting a simple garden hose to the drainage port. Now matter how much moisture is condensed, the machine will continue to run and dispose of the accumulated water wherever you’d like. The FAD504DWD does not have a built-in pump so the device needs to sit higher than the hose.

Alternatively, you can purchase a pump separately if you plan on running the hose through a spot higher than where the Frigidaire sits.

Decent Air Purifying Performance

Not only does the FAD504DWD remove airborne moisture particles, but it can also purify the air. It does this by passing the suctioned air through a fine-mesh filter that traps most dust, hair, and lint from passing around the dehumidifying coils.

Just note that this is NOT an air purifier and will not perform nearly as well standalone models.

Hygrometer Accuracy

The one complaint that’s consistent among customers is the accuracy of the hygrometer or lack thereof. The hygrometer measures the relative humidity level of a room, giving you an idea of which fan speed to activate and for how long.

However, the FAD504DWD’s hygrometer is typically off by more than 5% higher than actual relative humidity, forcing the dehumidifier to activate before it’s even needed. This isn’t the worst thing in the world, but it’s definitely worth noticing.

Whisper-Quiet Operation

But the one area where this Frigidaire unit excels in is noise output. From its lowest to highest fan speeds, it generates between 30 and 57 decibels. Its quietest setting makes it appropriate for use in the bedroom, and on its highest speed, the constant 57-decibel hum will most likely be drowned out by regular background noises.

Verdict: Should I Get the Frigidaire FAD504DWD?

A quick look at this device and you’ll most likely be put-off by its less-than-attractive casing, but it’s what is inside that matters most. In the case of the FAD504DWD, you probably won’t find another 50-PPD dehumidifier that performs as well as this.

Despite its inaccurate hygrometer, users will definitely find the Frigidaire FAD504DWD to be a reliable tool to keep sweltering summer heat at bay.
