The Bissell Symphony Pet Steam Mop 1543A is a hybrid steam mop and vacuum cleaner that does both jobs beautifully. This lightweight hybrid tool is made to lift and remove the stubbornest pet stains from bare floors by harnessing the power of steam and amazing suction.
Keep reading to see just how fantastic and feature-packed the Symphony 1543A truly is.
Steam Cleaning Performance
The greatest benefit of using steam to clean floors over traditional mopping is that you don’t need to use potentially harmful chemicals where your pets and children play.

All you need is a couple of cups of water, to wait a few minutes for the 1543A’s 1100W heater to produce steam, and you’re ready to roll.
It comes with several wide microfiber pads that cling onto most dust and grime in just a single swipe. Plus, there are two steam modes—Lo for everyday cleaning and Hi for the stickiest, stubbornest messes you can think of.
Vacuum Performance
Note that the 1543A is a 2-in-1 tool that steam cleans and vacuums—even simultaneously if you’d like. As a vacuum cleaner, it’s not 100% foolproof, as in its lack of a stiff-bristle brushroll won’t do much for you on carpeted floors, and it does struggle to pick up every tiny piece of debris from unsealed grout.
But on bare floors in general, it’s a pretty decent vacuum cleaner that definitely frees your floor of dust, fallen kibbles, and other dry pieces of debris.
Reusable and Disposable Mop Pads
The 1543A comes with two a wide selection of different mopping pads. There are two reusable mopping pads, one smooth and another with scrubby fibers, for common stains and messes. To clean them, just rinse them under a running faucet for a couple of seconds—you’ll get roughly two months of use out of each pad before requiring replacements.
There’s also an 8-pack of disposable scented pads that you use for stains where washing the pad doesn’t make sense (e.g. wiping away pet droppings).

SteamBoost Scented Pads
But that’s not all. The 1543A also comes with a pad made by the combined efforts of Swiffer and Bissell known as SteamBoost Scented Pads. These pads help in dissolving dirt and grime from tiles and floorboards while the soft fibers lock the stain in place.
You get a trial set of four SteamBoost pads with your purchase of the 1543A; refills are easily found online.
13-ounce Clean Water Tank
The 1543A is a compact steam mop with a compact clean water tank. At most, it holds onto 13 fluid ounces of water which should provide just under 15 minutes of continuous steam.
This is hardly any steam and will most likely require multiple refills to complete an entire room, which can be an inconvenience. However, considering its lightweight design (just under 10 pounds dry-weight), you can’t fault the 1543A too much.
But what we can fault is the long boiling time. This device requires at least two minutes to boil water and produce steam, and even then, it’s only enough for roughly 20 to 30-second bursts.
From the 15 minutes of steam that the 1543A promises, you’ll spend more than 30 minutes waiting around.

Dry Dirty Tank Technology
What’s better than handing mucky water filled with dirt, grime, and whatever pet leavings your steam cleaner managed to pick up? Anything. Unless, of course, the dirty water tank didn’t actually contain dirty water.
The 1543A’s dirty tank is completely dry, making it easier to dump out the messy contents and a heck of a lot easier to flush clean.
No On/Off Button
What’s truly odd about the 1543A is that it doesn’t have an on/off button or switch. Instead, as soon as you plug it in, it starts right up without any warning.
We’d recommend keeping the unit on Lo mode when stored so it doesn’t give you a loud surprise as soon as it’s plugged in.

Verdict: Is the Bissell Symphony 1543A Steam Mop Any Good?
There’s no denying that the Bissell 1543A is an excellent steam cleaner. It’s not a perfect steam cleaner as you can tell from its extraordinarily long waiting time and steam delivery time ratio, but it does a great job at removing the nastiest, stubbornest stains your pets (and maybe children) leave behind.
But its versatility (2-in-1 vacuum and steam mop) is what makes it stand out.
